The mid-day meal poisoning tragedy in Bihar, in which

23 children lost their lives, has alerted the Assam Government as the possibility of such an incident happening in the State cannot be ruled out. Assam has a history of food poisoning due to use of pesticides and only recently more than 300 children of Sonapur area on the outskirts of Guwahati were admitted to hospital after consuming gram. He also said that now the scheme in every school is implemented by the head master of the school and he is overburdened. The Government is planning to form mothers' associations in every school and the mothers would be entrusted with the responsibility of implementing the scheme. "We believe that if the mothers are engaged in the scheme, the quality of the midday meal will definitely improve as they would be able to take extra care. The mothers to be involved in the scheme would also be given a token amount."
