    Robert Louis Stevenson was a Scottish writer, essayist and poet born on November 13, 1850 in Edinburgh, Scotland. As a child he was sick and suffered from a lung disease that later developed into tuberculosis. Even as a young boy, Stevenson loved the open air and the sea. He also loved to read. Although he started to study engineering and then law, he gave up both as his real love was writing.
    It was in 1888, when he sailed the South Seas with his wife, his mother and his stepson. There he learned about the life of the islander he encountered. Finally, he settled at Upolu, an island in the South Seas that also proved to be beneficial for his health. He became a planter on the island and his kindness and understanding won him the affection of the natives.
