There lived a woodcutter in a small hut in a village. One day when he was cutting a tree, he got tired and slept under the shade of the tree. Soon he started dreaming. He saw a beautiful maiden wearing a green coloured sari having some flowers and fruits in a basket. The maiden said to the woodcutter, "Do you know what will happen if all the trees are cut? There will be no rain. The entire land will become a desert. No flowers, no crops and no fresh air to breathe. What will people eat? Trees are our mother. Do you want to kill your mother by cutting them?" Suddenly the woodcutter got up, threw his axe and with folded hands begged pardon of the tree. Next day, he became a sage and lived in the village happily looking after the trees till his death.
