Nuclear fusion occurs when two light-weight nuclei fuse (combine Land form a nucleus of heavier element. Consider the following statements regarding nuclear fusion.
    1. Extremely intense heat is needed for fusion to occur.
    2. Nuclear fusion can occur in plasma only.
    3. Generally, nuclear fusion are uncontrolled chain reaction.
    4. Tokamak is most successful nuclear fusion reactor.
Which of the statements given above are correct?

    A)  1, 2 and 3

    B)  1, 3 and 4

    C)  2, 3 and 4

    D)  All of these

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

[d] Plasma is special form of matter which has free electrons and free nuclei. Normally, nuclei repel one another, But, if plasma containing light-weight atomic nuclei is heated by many millions of degree, nuclei may overcome electrical barriers and fuse. Generally, nuclear fusion reactions are uncontrolled one but through the technique 'Magnetic confinement', it could be controlled. To kamak is one such fusion reactor, which uses magnetic field to push plasma away from it's containing walls. India has developed to kamak 'ADITYA' for research purposes at Institute of Plasma Research, Ahmedabad.
