    [d] On the basis of Macaulay's minute of 1835, William Bentinck's Government on 7th March, 1835, proclaimed English as India's official language. Before this, The English East India Company showed very little interest in the education. The only two minor exception being (1) Calcutta, Madrasaset up by Warren Hastings in 1781 and (2) Sanskrit College at Varanasi by Jonathan Duncan in 1792. In 1844, Lord Hardinge I decided to introduce government employment for Indians educated in English schools. The success of English education was thus assured.
