A person swims a certain distance downstream in 20 minutes and comes back upstream in 120 minutes. If the speed of the stream is 2 kmph, what is the speed of the swimmer in still water?

    A)  2.2 kmph

    B)  3.2kmph

    C)    2.8 kmph

    D)    1.8 kmph

    E)  3 kmph

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

    Let the speed of the swimmer be\[x\]kmph in still water. \[\therefore \] Speed downstream will be (x + 2) kmph and speed upstream will be (x - 2) kmph. \[\therefore (x+2)\times \frac{20}{60}=(x-2)\times \frac{120}{60}\] or, \[\frac{(x+2)}{3}=(x-2)\times 2\] or, \[x+2=6x-12\] or, \[12+2=6x-x\] \[\therefore x=\frac{14}{5}=2.8\,kmph\]
