    Pipe Q can fill a water tank in 8 hours, Pipe R can fill the same tank in 12 hours and Pipe S-can empty the tank in 24 hours. If all three pipes are opened together in how many hours will the tank be completely filled or empty?

    Solution :

    If all pipes are opened together, in one hour they will fill \[\frac{1}{8}+\frac{1}{12}-\frac{1}{24}=\frac{3+2-1}{24}=\frac{1}{6}\] Part of the Tank. Hence the tank will completely fill in 6 hours. Method II. LCM of 8, 12 and 24 = 24 \[\therefore \]Total capacity of tank = 24 units \[\therefore \] Pipe Q fills in one hour \[\frac{24}{8}\] = 3 unit/hour R fills in one hour\[=\frac{24}{12}=2\] units/h S empties in one hour\[=\frac{24}{24}=1\] unit/h Time taken to fill the tank \[=\frac{24}{3+2-1}\] = 6 hours
