The total number of graduates (male and female) in town Z was 4200. If the number of non-graduate females was 320 more than the number of non-graduate males, what was the male population of the town?

    A) 1872

    B) 2850

    C)        2150

    D)        3250

    E) 3100

    Correct Answer: E

    Solution :

    Total number of graduate population in Town \[Z=4200\] \[\therefore \]Total population \[=100\times \frac{4200}{60}=7000\] \[\therefore \]Total non-graduate population\[=7000-4200\]\[=2800\] Let the no. of non-graduate males be\[x\]. Now, according to the question, Non-graduate females\[=x+320\] \[\therefore \]\[x+x+320=2800\] or,\[2x=2800-320\] or,\[x=\frac{2480}{2}=1240\] \[\therefore \]Non-graduate males\[=1240\] Non-graduate female \[=1240+520=1560\] % of non-graduate females \[=100-60=40%\] \[\therefore \]\[40%=1560\] \[\therefore \]\[100%=3900\] \[\therefore \]Total male population\[=7000-3900=3100\]
