Direction: Study the following pie-charts and line graph carefully and answer the questions given below: The pie-charts show the distance covered by boats moving upstream and downstream by different boats. And the line graph shows the speed of stream (in kmph) of different boats. Distance covered upstream = 2600 km Distance covered downstream = 1800 km

The speed of boat B in still water is \[114\frac{2}{7}%\]of the speed of boat E in still water. If the speed of boat E instill water is 14 kmph then what will be the ratio of the time taken by boat B to travel upstream to that taken by boat E to travel downstream?

    A)  68:37

    B)  37:68

    C)  68:27

    D)  48:37

    E)  None of these

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

    Downstream speed of boat E = 14 + 3 = 17 kmph Speed of boat B in still water \[=114\frac{2}{7}%\times 14=\frac{8}{7}\times 14=16\,kmph\] \[\because \] Speed of stream for boat \[B=3\]kmph \[\therefore \] Upstream speed of boat B = (16 - 3 =) 13 kmph \[\therefore \] Distance travelled by boat \[B=\frac{16}{100}\times 2600\] = 416 km Distance travelled by boat \[E=\frac{12}{100}\times 1800\] = 216 km Time taken by boat B upstream: Time taken by boat E downstream \[=\frac{416}{13}:\frac{216}{17}=32\times 17:216=68:27\]
