  • question_answer
A barometer reads 74 cm on a steel scale; the room temperature is \[25{}^\circ C\]. The scale is correctly graduated for \[0{}^\circ C\]. Find the true atmospheric pressure, \[({{\alpha }_{steel}}=1.2\times {{10}^{-5}}{{/}^{o}}C,\]\[{{\gamma }_{Hg}}=1.8\times {{10}^{-4}}{{/}^{o}}C)\]

    A)  74.0042 cm

    B)  76 cm

    C)  74.878 cm

    D)  74.0222 cm

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

74 cm is apparent reading. True reading of steel   scale   at   room   temperature = 74 (1 + \[\alpha \] x 25) = 74.0222 cm. This is the height of mercury column at \[25{}^\circ C\], which is nothing but atmospheric pressure.
