Substances which prevent coagulation by removal of calcium ions are

    A) Ethylene diamine tetraacetate (EDTA) and citrate or oxalate of potassium or sodium

    B) Vitamin \[K\]

    C) Protamines

    D) Both [b] and [c]

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Coagulation can be prevented by lowering temperature, avoiding contact with water - wettable surface and injured tissue, removal of calcium ions and precipitation of fibrinogen, etc. Calcium ions can be removed by precipitation by adding citrates or oxalates of Na or K. Sodium fluoride is also used. Calcium ions can also be removed by forming a complex compound of it with EDTA, di-and tri-sodium citrate.
