A line segment 56 cm long is to be divided into two parts in the ratio of \[2:5\]. Find the length of each part.

    Answer:

Given, total length of line segment = 56 cm and ratio of divided parts \[=2:5\] Let the length of line segment \[=2x\] and \[=5x\]                                                                                       [where, x is a multiple of quantity] Then, total length of line segment \[=2x+5x=7x\] [since, divided length ratio is equals to length of line segment] \[7x=56\Rightarrow x=\frac{56}{7}\Rightarrow x=8\]                                                                                            On putting the value of x in both parts, we get length of each part. \[\therefore \] First part \[=2x=2\times 8=16\] [x = 8, by solving] and second part \[=5x=5\times 8=40\] [x = 8, by solving] Hence, first part 16 cm and second part is 40 cm.
