  • question_answer
    If a, b, c are positive integers such that \[{{a}^{2}}+{{b}^{2}}=45\] and \[{{b}^{2}}+{{c}^{2}}=40,\]find the values of a, b, c

    A) 9, 4, 5

    B)  3, 8, 2

    C)  5, 3, 4

    D)  3, 6, 2

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

    \[{{a}^{2}}+{{b}^{2}}=45\] and \[{{b}^{2}}+{{c}^{2}}=40\] On subtracting, we get \[{{a}^{2}}-{{c}^{2}}=5\]\[\Rightarrow \]\[(a+c)(a-c)=5\] \[\Rightarrow \]   \[a+c=5\] and \[a-c=1\] \[\Rightarrow \]   \[a=3,\]\[c=2,\]\[9+{{b}^{2}}=45\]\[\Rightarrow \]\[{{b}^{2}}=36\] \[\Rightarrow \]   \[b=\sqrt{36}=6\] \[\therefore \]      \[a=3,\]\[b=6\]and \[c=2\]
