    Men, animals, birds, plants and insects of this planet are each of them a link in the great chain of life. They are interdependent for their survival. If they are at peace with one another and their surroundings, they may be said to sustain a state of equilibrium. This the ecologists say, is conducive to the growth of all species. Population explosion and rapid advances in technology have disrupted this ecological balance. Most vulnerable to these influences are plants whose extinction sets off chain reactions exterminating other species. A knowledge of relations of living organisms to each other and to their surroundings is essential to save the earth form turning it into a lifeless desert.
