Inversion of temperature in the troposphere occurs when
    1. Nights are short
    2. Sky is covered with clouds
    3. Weather is stable
    4. Air is dry
Which of the above factors are correct?

    A)  1 and 2 only

    B)  2 and 3 only

    C)  3 and 4 only

    D)  1 and 4 only

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

[c] Inversion of temperature occurs when nights are long because insolation received during day time is radiated at night. Longer nights give sufficient time for radiation to be effective and the earth's surface cools down sufficiently. The air touching the earth's surface is also cooled to a great extent while the upper air is still warm. Cloud cover obstructs the heat radiated from the earth's surface and hampers the occurrence of inversion of temperature. Continuous radiation of heat is possible in a stable weather. This condition leads to temperature inversion. Change in weather disturbs the temperature inversion. Moist air has greater capacity to absorb heat radiation and obstructs the temperature inversion. But dry air does not absorb much radiation and promotes temperature inversion.
