    [a] Mesolithic Age: It flourished between 8,000 to 4,000 B.C. and had what is known as 'Microliths' culture. Grinding and polishing technique characterized it. The tool typology included polished axes, chisel, ring stone, saddle quern and mullers. In this age stone tools were began to be made more pointed and sharp. Though the handled stone tools were simple they were now attached to thick branches from trees with rope made from animal skin and sinew. The domestication of animals and growing of wild varieties of crops also characterized this period. Archaeological excavations have unearthed Mesolithic period sites in the Chottanagpur area of Central India and the areas of the Krishna River. The important tools are; Blade: It is called fluting. These blades are more sharp and effective than ordinary blades. Pointed arrowheads and spearheads. Triangles were used for cutting purposes or as arrowheads. Lunates were used to obtain concave edge or two of these could be halved back to back to form an arrowhead. Trapeze could have been used as arrowheads. The Bhimbetka caves near Bhopal belongs to the Mesolithic Age and these are famous for their cave paintings. They are said to be 12,000 years old. Artists during the pre-historic age used white and red pigments for depicting things. Bhimbetka was discovered by V S Wakanker of the Vikram University, Ujjain in 1957. Millet (Ragi) was suppose to be first cultivated crop by the Neolithic farmers of South India.
