    Consider the following statements
    1. Big Bang Theory was proposed by E George Lamaitre
    2. According to this theory, our universe sprang into existence as 'singularity' around 10 billion years ago. Which of the above statements is/are correct?

    A)  Only 1

    B)  Only 2

    C)  Both 1 and 2

    D)  None of these

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

[a] The Big Bang theory is the prevailing cosmological model for the early development of the universe. The key idea is that the universe is expanding. Consequently, the universe was denser and hotter in the past. In particular, the Big Bang model suggests that at some moment all matter in the universe was contained in a single point, which is considered the beginning of the universe. Modem measurements place this moment at approximately 13.82 billion years ago, which is thus considered the age of the universe. Georges Lemaitre first proposed what became the Big Bang theory in 1927. Over time, scientists built on his initial ideas of cosmic expansion and that this expansion could be traced back to the cosmic origin to form the modem synthesis. The framework for the Big Bang model relies on Albert Einstein's general relativity and on simplifying assumptions such as homogeneity and isotropy of space.
