    [c] Towards the close of the eighteenth century, numerous missionary groups strongly urged the Company to introduce Christianity and English education in India. The lead was taken by Charles Grant, William Wilberforce, Henry Thornton and Edward Party. In 1792, Grant published a pamphlet in which he pleaded for the introduction of English language in India. He observed 'The true cure of darkness is the introduction of light'. But his efforts were of no avail.
