A transparent cube of \[15cm\] edge contains a small air bubble. It apparent depth when viewed through one face is \[6cm\] and when viewed through the opposite face is\[4cm\]. Then the refractive index of the material of the cube will be:

    A)  \[2.0\]

    B)  \[2.5\]

    C)  \[1.6\]

    D)  \[1.5\]

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

Let real depth of the bubble from one side is u. Then from formula,             \[\mu =\frac{Real\text{ }depth}{Appearent\text{ }depth}\] From other side of the cube:             \[\mu =\frac{u}{6}\]                          ?.(i) From other side of the cube:             \[\mu =\frac{15-u}{4}\]                     ?.(ii) \[\therefore \] From equations (i) and (ii) we get,             \[\mu =\frac{u}{6}=\frac{15-u}{4}\Rightarrow u=9cm\] Therefore,     \[\mu =\frac{u}{6}=\frac{9}{6}=1.5\]
