Three-tenth of a number is equal to 36% of another number. If the sum of these two number is 88, then what is the value of the smaller number?                                                                                                                     [UBI (Clerk) 2010]

    A) 38

    B) 40

    C) 48

    D) 34

    E) None of these

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

Let the two numbers be x and y.
    Then, \[\frac{3}{10}x=\frac{36}{100}\times y\]\[\Rightarrow \]\[x=\frac{12}{10}y\]
    Also, \[x+y=88\]
    \[\Rightarrow \]   \[\frac{12}{10}y+y=88\]
    \[\Rightarrow \]   \[\frac{22}{10}y=88\]\[\Rightarrow \]\[y=40\]
    \[\therefore \]      \[x=\frac{12}{10}\times 40=48\]
    \[\therefore \] Smaller number is 40.
