    Solution :

     Let the present ages of Jyoti and Amit be \[8x\] and \[9x\] years respectively. Jyoti's age after 4 years \[=8x+4\] \[\therefore 8x+4=28\] \[\Rightarrow \] \[8x=28-4=24\] \[\therefore \]  \[x=\frac{24}{8}=3\] \[\therefore \] Amit's age 8 years ago\[=(9x-8)\] years \[=(9\,\,\,\,\,3-8)\] years = 19 years
