The area of a square is equal to the area of a rectangle. The difference between the length and the breadth of the rectangle is 48 cms. and the breadth of the rectangle is one-fourth of its length. What is the side of the square?

    A)  32cm

    B)  16cm

    C)  64 cm

    D)  Cannot be determined

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

     Breadth of rectangle = \[x\] cm \[\therefore \] Length \[=(x+48)\] cm \[\Rightarrow \] \[4x=x+48\]             \[\Rightarrow \] \[3x=48\] \[\Rightarrow \] \[x=\frac{48}{3}=16\] Length of rectangle \[=48+16=64\] cm \[\therefore \] Area of square = Area of rectangle \[=(16\,\,\,\,64)\] sq. cm. \[\therefore \] Side of square \[=\sqrt{16\,\,\,\,\,\,64}\] \[=32\] cm
