Write short notes on the following. (i) Carbylamines reaction (ii) Coupling reaction                                                                                                           [1+1]

    Answer:

Carbylamines reaction Primary amines on heating with chloroform and alcoholic KOH give unpleasant smell of carbylamines (RNC). This reaction is called carbylamines reaction. Carbylamines is also called isocyanides 2° and 3° amines do not give this reaction hence can be distinguished from 1° amine by this reaction.                                                           [1] (ii) Coupling    reaction Benzene    diazonium chloride reacts with phenol (alkaline) to form p-hydroxy azo benzene. Hydroxy group is at p-position and this type of reactions is called coupling reaction. This is used to identify aromatic 1 ° amines and takes place at very low temperature (273 K). It is a case of electrophonic substitution in benzene nucleus.                                               [1]
