The base of a solid right prism is triangle whose sides are 9 cm, 12 cm and 15 cm. The height of the prism is 5 cm. Then, the total surface area of the prism is

    A) \[180\,c{{m}^{2}}\]

    B) \[234\,c{{m}^{2}}\]

    C) \[228\,c{{m}^{2}}\]

    D) \[270\,c{{m}^{2}}\]

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

    Perimeter of triangle \[=(s)=\frac{9+12+15}{2}=18\,cm\] \[\therefore \] Area of triangle             \[=\sqrt{s(s-a)(s-b)(s-c)}\]             \[=\sqrt{18(18-9)(18-12)(18-15)}\]             \[=\sqrt{18\times 9\times 6\times 3}\]             \[=54\,sq\,cm\] \[\therefore \] Total surface area of the prism = Perimeter of base height \[+\,\,2\,\,\times \] Area of base \[=36\times 5+2\times 54=288\text{ }sq\text{ }cm\]
