Suppose, y is equal to the sum of two quantities of which one varies directly as x and the other inversely as x. If y = 6 when x = 4 and y = 10/ 3, when x = 3, then what is the relation between x and y?

    A) \[y=x+(4/x)\]

    B) \[y=-2x+(4/x)\]

    C) \[y=2x+(8/x)\]

    D) \[y=2x-(8/x)\]

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

    By given condition, \[y=lx+\frac{m}{x}\]                             ?(i) where l and m are proportionality constant. Where \[y=6,\] \[x=4,\] then             \[6=4l+\frac{m}{4}\]                             \[\Rightarrow \]   \[16l+m=24\]                            ?(ii) When \[y=\frac{10}{3},\] \[x=3,\] than \[\frac{10}{3}=3l+\frac{m}{n}\] \[\Rightarrow \]   \[9l+m=10\]                              ?(iii) On solving Eqs. (ii) and (iii), we get             \[l=2,\] \[M=-\,8\] From Eq. (i),             \[y=2x-\frac{8}{x}\]
