If the side of a square is increased by 25%, then how much per cent does its area get increased?

    A) 56.25

    B) 50

    C) 12.5

    D) 156.25

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

    Let the side of a square \[=a\,\,unit\] \[\therefore \]      Area of a square \[={{a}^{2}}\,sq\,unit\] New side of a square = 125% of a             \[=\frac{125a}{100}=\frac{5a}{4}\] \[\therefore \] New area of square \[={{\left( \frac{5a}{4} \right)}^{2}}\]             \[=\left( \frac{5a}{4} \right)\times \left( \frac{5a}{4} \right)=\frac{25{{a}^{2}}}{16}\] Change in area \[=\frac{25{{a}^{2}}}{16}-{{a}^{2}}=\frac{9{{a}^{2}}}{16}\] Percentage of change             \[=\frac{9{{a}^{2}}/16}{{{a}^{2}}}\times 100%=\frac{9\times 100}{16}%\]             \[=56.25%\]
