In an examination 70% of candidates passed in English, 80% passed in Mathematics, 10% failed in both subjects. If 144 candidates passed in both, the total number of candidates was

    A) 125

    B) 200

    C) 240

    D) 375

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

    Percentage of total failed candidates \[=(30+20-10)%\] \[=40%\] \[\therefore \] Percentage of total passed candidates \[=60%\] Let total number of candidates \[=x\] \[\therefore \] \[60%\text{ of }x=144\] \[\Rightarrow \]   \[\frac{x\times 60}{100}=144\] \[\Rightarrow \]   \[x=\frac{144\times 100}{60}=240\]
