    A motorboat takes 2 h to travel a distance of 9 km down the current and it takes 6 h to travel the same distance against the current. What is the speed of the boat in still water in km/h?

    Solution :

    Let the speed of motorboat \[=x\,\text{km/h}\]c and the speed of water \[=y\,\text{km/h}\] By given condition,             \[\frac{9}{x+y}=2\] \[\Rightarrow \]   \[2x+2y=9\]                              ?(i) and       \[\frac{9}{x-y}=6\] \[\Rightarrow \]   \[6x-6y=9\]                                ?(ii) On solving Eqs. (i) and (ii), we get \[x=3\text{ km/h}\]and \[y=1.5\text{ km/h}\] Hence, the speed of boat \[=3\text{ km/h}\]
