40 L of mixture of milk and water content 10% of water. The water to be added to make the water content 20% in the new mixture, is

    A) 6 L

    B) 6.5 L

    C) 3.5

    D) 5 L

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

    Let x L of water should be added to change the percentage of water. Quantity of water in 40 L of mixture             \[=\frac{40\times 10}{100}=4\,L\] \[\therefore \]      \[\frac{x+4}{40+x}=\frac{20}{100}\] \[\Rightarrow \]   \[5x+20=40+x\] \[\Rightarrow \]   \[x=\frac{20}{4}=5\] \[\therefore \] 5 L of water should be mixed.
