At what time between 9 and 10 o'clock will the hands of a clock be in the same straight line but not together?

    A)  \[16\frac{4}{11}\] min past 9

    B)  \[16\frac{2}{11}\] min past 9

    C)  \[15\frac{4}{11}\] min past 9

    D)  \[15\frac{3}{11}\] rain past 9

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

The hands are in opposite Direction. At 9 o'clock, the hands of the clock are 15 min spaces apart. To be in opposite Direction they must be 30 min spaces apart. So, the minute hand has to gain only (30 - 15) min i.e., 15 min spaces. 55 min spaces are gained in 60 min 15 min spaces are gained in \[\left( \frac{60}{55}\times 15 \right)\] min \[=\left( \frac{180}{11} \right)\]                         \[=16\frac{4}{11}\,\min \] \[\therefore \] Required time \[=16\frac{4}{11}\,\min \] min past 9.
