A man sold an article at a loss of 20%. If he had sold it for Rs. 50 more, be would have gained 5%. The cost price of the article was

    A)  Rs. 250

    B)  Rs. 300

    C)  Rs. 180

    D)  Rs. 200

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

    Let the CP of the article be Rs. x SP of the article at 20% loss \[=x\times \frac{80}{100}=Rs.\frac{4x}{5}\] In second case, \[\Rightarrow \]   \[\frac{4x}{5}+50=\frac{105x}{100}\] \[\Rightarrow \]   \[\frac{4x}{5}+50=\frac{21x}{20}\] \[\Rightarrow \]   \[\frac{21x}{20}-\frac{4x}{5}=50\] \[\Rightarrow \]   \[\frac{21x-16x}{20}=50\] \[\Rightarrow \]   \[\frac{5x}{20}=50\] \[\Rightarrow \]   \[x=Rs.\,200\]
