    Some friends went on a picnic and planned to spend Rs 108 on foods. Out of them three did not reach there, as a result of this remaining friends had to pay Rs 3 extra. What was the number of friends in that picnic?

    Solution :

    Suppose there were x friends initially, share on each on food = Rs \[\frac{108}{x}\] By question \[\frac{108}{x-3}-\frac{108}{x}=3\] \[\Rightarrow \,\,\,\,\,\,\frac{x-\left( x-3 \right)}{x(x-3)}=\frac{3}{108}\] \[\Rightarrow \,\,\,\,\,\,\frac{3}{{{x}^{2}}-3x}=\frac{3}{108}\] \[\Rightarrow \,\,\,\,\,\,{{x}^{2}}-3x-108=0\] \[\Rightarrow \,\,\,\,\,\left( x-12 \right)\left( x+9 \right)=0\,\,\therefore \,\,x=\mathbf{12}\]
