Two trains, each 200 m long, move towards each other on parallel lines with velocities 20 kmph and 30 kmph respectively. What is the time that elapses when they first meet, until they have crossed each other completely?

    A) \[20\text{ }sec\]

    B) \[24.8\text{ }sec\]

    C) \[28.8\text{ }sec\]

    D) \[30\text{ }sec\]

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

    Time taken by trains to cross each other \[=\frac{Sum\text{ }of\text{ }lengths\text{ }of\text{ }the\text{ }trains}{Relative\text{ }speed}\] \[=\frac{200+200}{(20+30)}\times \frac{18}{5}\] \[=\frac{400\times 18}{50\times 5}=\]
Short - cut Note: Relative speed in opposite direction \[=20+30=50\,kms/hr\] \[=50\times \frac{5}{18}m/s\]
