    The product of two numbers is 24 times the difference of these two numbers. If the sum of these numbers is 14, then the smallest number is

    A)  8

    B)  6

    C)  4

    D)  2

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

     let the numbers are a and b. Then,   \[ab=24\,\,(a-b)\]             ?....(i) and \[a+b=14\] \[b=(14-a)\] Put in equation (i)- \[a\,(14-a)=24\,(a-14+a)\] \[a\times 14-{{a}^{2}}=-336+48a\] \[{{a}^{2}}+34\,a-336=0\] \[{{a}^{2}}+42a-8a-336=0\] So, \[a=8\]and b = 6 \[\therefore \]  Smallest number = 6
