    17. A merchant has 100 kg of sugar, part of which he sells at 7% profit and rest at 17% profit. He gains 10% as a whole. Find how much is sold at 7% profit.

    A)  70 kg

    B)  30 kg

    C)  50 kg

    D)  10 kg

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

     Total gain %=. 10% \[\therefore \]  gain = 10% of 100 kg. \[=100kg\times \frac{10}{100}=10kg.\] Let the part of 7% gain = xkg. and the part of 17% gain\[=(100-x)kg\] \[\therefore \] By question, 7% of \[x+17%\] of \[(100-x)=10\,kg\] \[\Rightarrow \] \[\frac{7x}{100}+\frac{(100-x)17}{100}=10\] \[\Rightarrow \] \[\frac{7x+1700-17x}{100}=10\] \[\Rightarrow \] \[-10x+1700=1000\] \[\Rightarrow \] \[-10x=1000-1700=-700\] \[\Rightarrow \] \[x=\frac{-700}{-10}=70kg.\]
