NEET AIPMT SOLVED PAPER SCREENING 2008

  • question_answer
Acetophenone when reacted with a base, \[{{C}_{2}}{{H}_{5}}ONa,\] yields a stable compound which has the structure

    A)

    B)

    C)

    D)

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Key Idea: Aldehydes or ketones with \[\alpha -H\] atom, in presence of dilute base, undergoes aldol condensation to give \[\beta \]-hydroxy aldehyde or \[\text{-}\]hydroxy ketone. On heating, aldols eliminate, water molecule to form \[\alpha \text{,}\text{-}\]unsaturated compound.   Note: When aldehydes condense with ketones, it is the a-H of ketone which takes part in condensation. This reaction is called crossed aldol condensation.
