Nerve fibres transmit the nerve message by means of

    A)  chemical

    B)  physical

    C)  electro-chemical

    D)  electrical.

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

: The conduction of impulse is an active self- propagating, electrochemical process that moves along the nerve at a constant amplitude and velocity. Its characteristic series of potential changes is known as action potential. Action potential is generated through the influx of sodium ions causing depolarization of the membrane and this propagate in forward direction. Nerve impulses are relayed from the nerve endings through synapses. When an impulse reaches the terminal buttons, they give off a small amount of acetylcholine, while terminal buttons of postganglionic fibres of the autonomic nervous system give offsympathin. On being released the acetylcholine or sympathin contact the dendrites of the next neuron in which they cause a fresh impulse. After causing an impulse the acetylcholine or sympathin are immediately destroyed by enzymes.
