Thrombin indirectly deactivates factor VIII and V via

    A)  antithrombin II

    B)  protein C

    C)  tissue factor, pathway inhibtor

    D)  plasmin.

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

: Thrombin is an proteolytic enzyme that converts the soluble protein fibrinogen into the fibrous fibrin during blood clotting. Thrombin is a procoagulant that activates factors V and VIII but when thrombin binds to thrombomodulin it becomes an anticoagulant, in that the thrombomodulin-thrombin complex activates protein C (factor XIV). Activated protein C (APC) along with its cofactor protein S inactivate factor\[V\]and VIII and inactivates an inhibitor of tissue plasminogen activator increasing the formation of plasmin. Plasmin is the active component of the plasmimogen (fibrinolytic) system.
