The hereditary disease in which the urine of a person turns black on exposure to air due to the presence of homogentisic acid is known as

    A)  ketonuria

    B)  phenylketonuria

    C)  haematuria

    D)  alkaptonuria.

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

: Alkaptonuria is inherited metabolic disorder. Its most striking clinical manifestation is the darkening of urine exposed to air. Late in the disease, there is generalized pigmentation of connective tissues and a form of arthritis. Alkaptonuria, also called black urine disease, is caused by the autosomal recessive gene. Affected individuals are unable to synthesize homogenistic acid oxidase in the liver. The acid (homogenistic acid) remains undegraded and is excreted in the urine which is readily oxidized to give a dark product.
