In which of the following conditions a chemical reaction can not occur?

    A)  \[\Delta H\] and\[\Delta S\]increase and\[T\Delta S>\Delta H\]

    B)  \[\Delta H\]and\[\Delta S\]decrease and \[\Delta H>T\Delta S\]

    C)  \[\Delta H\]increases and\[\Delta S\]increases

    D)  \[\Delta H\]decreases and\[\Delta S\]increases

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

    : (i) When\[\Delta H\]and\[\Delta S\]increase, then, if\[T\Delta S>\Delta H\]the reaction is spontaneous. \[\therefore \]\[\Delta G=\Delta H-T\Delta S=-ve\] (ii) When\[\Delta H\]and\[\Delta S\]decrease, then if\[\Delta H>T\Delta S\]. This makes\[\Delta G\]-ve and process is spontaneous. (iii) If,\[\Delta H\]increases and\[\Delta S\]decreases, then \[\Delta G\]is\[+ve\]and process is non-spontaneous. (iv) If\[\Delta H\]decreases and\[\Delta S\]increases, then \[\Delta G=-ve\]and process is spontaneous.
