Electrolytic reduction method is used in extraction of

    A)  highly electronegative elements

    B)  elements having high electron affinity

    C)  highly electropositive elements

    D)  transition elements

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Electrolytic reduction method is used in extraction of highly electropositive element. The oxides of highly electropositive metals of group 1 and 2 cannot be reduced easily with carbon at moderate temperatures. These metals are thus, extracted by the electrolysis of their salts (generally oxides, hydroxides or chlorides in fused state), e.g. sodium is obtained by the electrolysis of fused NaCI or brine. \[NaClN{{a}^{+}}+C{{l}^{-}}\]                 \[N{{a}^{+}}+{{e}^{-}}\xrightarrow{{}}Na\] (at cathode)                 \[C{{l}^{-}}\xrightarrow{{}}C{{l}^{-}}+{{e}^{-}}\] (at anode)                 \[Cl+Cl\xrightarrow{{}}C{{l}_{2}}\uparrow \]
