    Zn gives\[{{\text{H}}_{\text{2}}}\] gas with \[{{\text{H}}_{\text{2}}}\text{S}{{\text{O}}_{\text{4}}}\]and \[\text{HCl}\]but not with \[\text{HN}{{\text{O}}_{\text{3}}}\]

    A)  Zn act as oxidizing agent when react      with \[\text{HN}{{\text{O}}_{3}}\]

    B)  \[\text{HN}{{\text{O}}_{3}}\]is weaker acid than \[{{\text{H}}_{\text{2}}}\text{S}{{\text{O}}_{\text{4}}}\]and  \[\text{HCl}\]

    C)  in electrochemical series Zn is above hydrogen

    D)  \[\text{NO}_{3}^{-}\] is reduced in preference to hydronium ion

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

Zn is present above \[{{\text{H}}_{\text{2}}}\]in electrochemical series. So, it liberates hydrogen gas from dilute \[\text{HCl/}{{\text{H}}_{\text{2}}}\text{S}{{\text{O}}_{\text{4}}}\text{.}\]But\[\text{HN}{{\text{O}}_{3}}\]is a strong oxidizing agent so it oxidizes the hydrogen obtained into \[{{\text{H}}_{\text{2}}}\text{O}\text{.}\]In \[\text{HN}{{\text{O}}_{\text{3}}}\text{,NO}_{3}^{-}\]ion is reduced and give \[N{{H}_{4}}N{{O}_{3}},{{N}_{2}}O,NO\]and \[\text{N}{{\text{O}}_{\text{2}}}\](based upon the concentration of\[\text{HN}{{\text{O}}_{\text{3}}}\]). \[4Zn+10HN{{O}_{3}}\xrightarrow{{}}4Zn{{(N{{O}_{3}})}_{2}}\]                                 \[+N{{H}_{4}}N{{O}_{3}}+3{{H}_{2}}O\]
