    In Musa, inflorescence is:

    A)  capitulum

    B)  corymb

    C)  spadix

    D)  polychasial cyme

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Musa (banana) has spadix type of inflorescence. The inflorescence is covered by a large bract called, spathe and axis become fleshy. Corymb inflorescence consists of pedicellate bisexual flower borne in acropetal succession having some shortening of axis at the top. The lower flowers are long stalked whereas the upper one with short stalk, therefore appear at the same level e.g., Iberis, Cassia etc. Capitulum or head inflorescence consists of mono or dimorphic florets borne on a condensed axis the receptacle, in acropetal manner but appear centripetal due to much condensation of the axis. e.g.. Dahlia, Sonchus, Vernonia etc. In Polychasial or multiparous cymose inflorescence the axis terminates in a flower. Now more than two flowers arise laterally in each subsequent whorl e.g., Calotropis.
