Bacteria and fungi developing on dead decaying organisms are :

    A)  parasites

    B)  commensals

    C)  saprophytes

    D)  symbionts

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Bacteria and fungi are mostly heterotrophic i.e., they require an organic source of carbon. When these grow on dead decaying organism these are called saprophytes. When the bacteria and fungi grow on living organisms and derive their nutrition without killing them than these are called parasites. Commensalism is an association between members of different species, in which only one is benefitted and neither is harmed e.g., Epiphytes, lianas. Symbiosis is an mutual interspecific    association in which both the species derive benefit. In this association these occurs a close and often permanent and obligatory contact more or less essential for survival of each.
