    Function of clitellum is :

    A)  formation of cocoon

    B)  excretion

    C)  respiration

    D)  circulation

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Clitellum is a girdle- like thick band of glandular tissue which completely and permanently surrounds the segments 14 to 16. It secretes mucus, albumen and an egg case or cocoon for eggs. In Pheretima the fertilization is external and takes place in the cocoons. In earthworm respiration takes place by diffusion of gases through general body surface. Haemoglobin dissolved in plasma of blood acts as a respiratory pigment transporting \[{{O}_{2}}\]  to the body tissue. In earthworm excretion is effected by segmentaly arranged microscopic coiled tubes called nephridia. According to their location in the body they may be pharyngeal, integumentary and septal. The circulatory or blood vascular system of earthworm is a closed system consisting of blood vessels and capillaries.
