By which mechanism, oxygen is transported from lungs to cells?

    A)  Diffusion

    B)  Facilitated diffusion

    C)  Transpiration

    D)  Osmosis

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Oxygen is transported from the lungs to the cells by simple diffusion. The respiratory membrane (alveolar capillary membrane) has a limit of gaseous exchange between alveoli and pulmonary blood. This is called diffusing capacity. Facilitated diffusion requires interaction of a carrier protein. The carrier protein aids passage of molecules or ions through the membrane by binding chemically with them. The process of net movement of water across semipermeable membrane caused by a concentration difference of water is called osmosis. Transpiration is the loss of water from aerial parts of plants. Curtis called it necessary evil.
