    Select the correct statement.

    A)  legumes are incapable of fixing nitrogen

    B)  legumes fix nitrogen through bacteria living in fruits root

    C)  legumes fix nitrogen only by bacteria present in nodules

    D)  none of the above

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

The legumes (papilionaceous plants) are itself incapable of nitrogen fixation. The Rhizobium bacteria is present in the root of these plants and show a symbiotic relationship. The nitrogenase enzyme found in bacteria (Rhizobium), reduces the atmospheric nitrogen to ammonia. The ammonia does not remain in gaseous state in the soil but is changed to ionic form \[(NH_{4}^{+})\]. The ammonium nitrogen is converted to nitrate by nitrification. The \[{{N}_{2}}\] is used by the plants in form of nitrate.
