Which of the following is not the character of Taenia solium?

    A)  Apolysis

    B)  Proglottid

    C)  Metamerism

    D)  Strobila

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

The elongated body of tapeworm (Taenia solium) is divided into a great number of parts or segments called proglottids. This segmentation of tapeworm is called pseudometamerism in contrast to true metamerism of annelids and arthropods. The entire body is divided into scolex or head, unsegmented neck and segmented strobila. Strobila consists of 800-1000 segments or proglottids arranged in a linear series. A proglottidis a unit part of the body enclosing a complete set of genitalia. The oldest and last 150-350 proglottids upto the posterior end of body are termed gravid or ripe. Small groups of gravid proglottids detach from the posterior end of strobila and pass out with the hosts faeces. Shedding of gravid proglottids is termed apolysis and the tapeworm exhibiting this phenomenon is called apolytic.
