Blood cells do not shrink in blood because blood is

    A)  hypotonic

    B)  isotonic

    C)  equimolar

    D)  hypertonic

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

Key Idea Two solutions of different substances having same osmotic pressure at same temperature are known as isotonic solutions. Blood cells do not shrink in blood because blood is isotonic. When a cell is placed in a solution having an isotonic pressure (equal to its own) the cell maintains its normal volume. As isotonic solution has the same osmotic pressure as the cells contained in it, there is no concentration gradient.
