Why is CO poisonous for man?

    A)  CO affects the nerves of the lungs

    B)  CO affects the diaphragm and intercostal muscles

    C)  CO reacts with oxygen reducing percentage of \[{{O}_{2}}\]  in air

    D)  haemoglobin combines with CO instead \[{{O}_{2}}\]and the product cannot dissociate

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

normal amount of oxygen (21%) and small amount of CO, he suffers from suffocation  because     haemoglobin combines with CO to form a stable compound. The affinity of haemoglobin to CO is about 200 tunes more than for oxygen. 0.1% of CO blocks 50% Hb of the body due to which the oxygen carrying capacity of blood is decreased. This is called hypoxia.
